Norwich picnic and service marks Queen’s birthday

Ecumenical Christian charity Celebrate Norwich & Norfolk will be marking Her Majesty The Queen's official 90thBirthday on Sunday June 12, with a free picnic to honour local Christian volunteers, followed by a Celebration service, both at St John the Baptist Cathedral in Norwich.

Christian charities and organisations from across Norwich and Norfolk are being invited to nominate a volunteer and their family to attend the free picnic and fun afternoon at the Narthex visitor centre and its gardens at the St John the Baptist Cathedral, on Earlham Road in Norwich.

The theme of Celebrate Norwich & Norfolk this year is "Celebrating Volunteers" in line with the Queen's intention to do the same in London and across the country.

Invited volunteers will enjoy a free traditional afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones and cakes, prepared by the Garden Caf team at the Narthex from 3pm. There will also be games and activities to keep younger children amused including a bouncy castle.

Celebrate director, John Betts, said: "It will be a great opportunity for volunteers to relax, mix with other like-minded people and enjoy being appreciated for the volunteering they do.

"It's our aim to make this a joyous occasion as we celebrate the magnificent work which is done by volunteers from across the spectrum of Christian charities in Norwich and Norfolk and to thank them for what they do 24/7, 365 days a year."

The free picnic will be followed by a service of Celebration in the St John the Baptist Cathedral from 4:30pm to 5.30pm to mark the end of the Celebrate weekend, to which all are welcome and no invitation is needed.

The speaker will be Julian Bryant East of England Regional Co-ordinator for Christian Aid and the service will include worship, prayer and stories of what has been happening over the Celebrate weekend.

If you would like someone from your church or organisation to receive a free invite for them and their family, please email celebrate@networknorwich.co.uk
