Wolsey Pilgrimage Returns to Ipswich

The ecumenical Guild of Our Lady of Grace of Ipswich will hold its annual pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady on Sunday 6 September, following a historic route through the town associated with Cardinal Thomas Wolsey.

The Wolsey Memorial Pilgrimage Walk will begin at 3pm at St Peter’s Church by the Waterfront, with pilgrims walking approximately a mile through Ipswich before finishing at St Mary-at-the-Elms at around 4pm.

While the route recalls Ipswich’s historic connection with Cardinal Wolsey, the pilgrimage is first and foremost an opportunity for Christians to come together in honour of Our Lady, pausing for prayer and reflection along the way.

The pilgrimage is organised by the ecumenical Guild of Our Lady of Grace of Ipswich, which promotes devotion to Our Lady of Grace and celebrates Ipswich’s longstanding Christian heritage.

Cardinal Wolsey, who was born in Ipswich in around 1473, provides an important historical connection to the route. Pilgrims will retrace a path associated with one of the town’s most famous sons while making their own public witness of Christian faith and devotion to Our Lady.

The walk will conclude at St Mary-at-the-Elms with a short service, followed by refreshments.

Everyone is welcome to take part and join this prayerful journey through the heart of Ipswich, becoming, as the organisers put it, “a living part of the history of Ipswich”.
