Day One – Our Pilgrimage to Rome Begins
Our pilgrimage began bright and early, with a 5am departure to catch our flight to Rome. Despite the early start, we landed with a great sense of energy and excitement, eager to immerse ourselves in this incredible city. We were especially delighted to discover that the Vatican is visible from our hotel windows – a powerful and beautiful reminder of the spiritual journey we’re undertaking.
After settling into our accommodation, we ventured out in small groups to find our first evening meal. This informal time allowed us to begin forming bonds, as we shared stories about ourselves, our home parishes (and for some, the fact that they’ve joined us from outside the diocese), and the reasons we each felt called to join this pilgrimage. The conversations were filled with laughter and depth, and it’s clear that we are already becoming a close-knit community.
Later that evening, we gathered at the Augustinian Chapel for our first Mass together, celebrated by Bishop Peter. It was a moving and grounding experience – a chance to pause, reflect, and centre ourselves spiritually at the very start of our pilgrimage.
As night fell, we enjoyed a short stroll through the Roman streets, soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. It was a peaceful end to a joyful first day – and with tired eyes and full hearts, we headed to bed, ready for all that tomorrow may bring.
