Saturday 2 August – Day 6
The day began early for the group, departing at 7:30am for Tor Vergata, the site of the weekend’s vigil and Papal Mass. Travelling by metro and continuing on foot, the pilgrims journeyed with high spirits, sharing songs, laughter, and mutual encouragement along the way.
Upon arrival, they set up camp amidst the scenic backdrop of surrounding mountains and were soon engaging with fellow pilgrims from around the world. Later in the morning, Mass was celebrated by Fr Peter and Fr Gladson, during which a couple within the group received a special blessing in celebration of their 15th wedding anniversary.
The rest of the day was filled with joyful singing and dancing, as well as heartfelt prayer ministry offered to fellow pilgrims nearby. The arrival of Pope Leo by helicopter was met with great excitement as he made his way around the crowds before leading the evening vigil.
The service, filled with reverence and energy, was a deeply spiritual encounter for many. Pope Leo’s preaching resonated strongly with the gathered pilgrims, and a period of Eucharistic adoration provided a moving opportunity to spend time in quiet intimacy with the Lord. The evening ended with a warm exchange of gifts between new international friends, and a welcome rest followed a day rich in worship and fellowship.
Sunday 3 August – Day 7
The final day began with a breathtaking sunrise over the camp, setting the tone for a memorable Sunday. Anticipation was high as Pope Leo returned to preside over Mass, with more than a million young people in attendance. His close proximity to the East Anglia group as he moved through the crowds was a particular highlight.
The Mass itself was a powerful expression of unity, with pilgrims joining together in beautiful, heartfelt worship. Following the service, the group faced the challenge of returning to their accommodation — a 13-mile journey in the heat. Some walked part of the way before finding taxis, while others queued patiently for the metro. Despite the long trek, everyone returned safely with time to rest and refresh before the final celebration.
That evening, the pilgrims gathered for a joyful three-course celebration dinner. It was a time of reflection, laughter, and gratitude, as members of the group shared heartfelt words and said their goodbyes. Special thanks were given to the Ignite team, as well as Hamish, Rebecca, and Fr Peter, whose efforts helped make the pilgrimage such a meaningful experience.
The Jubilee of Youth in Rome proved to be a transformative journey for the East Anglia pilgrims — deepening their faith, strengthening friendships, and leaving them with memories and spiritual encounters that will remain with them for years to come.
