The Diocese of East Anglia will mark a significant milestone on Friday 26 June when Catholics from across the region gather at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Norwich for a special Jubilee Mass celebrating 50 years of diocesan life.
The Mass, which begins at midday, will be celebrated by Bishop Peter Collins and will bring together clergy, religious and lay faithful from throughout Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Catholic, civic and ecumenical representatives will also be present for what promises to be a joyful and prayerful celebration of the Diocese’s Golden Jubilee.
The Diocese of East Anglia was established by Pope Paul VI in March 1976, when it was formed from the Diocese of Northampton. Over the past five decades it has grown into a vibrant and diverse Catholic community, serving one of the largest geographical areas of any diocese in England.
Since its foundation, the Diocese has witnessed significant growth and development. New parishes, schools and ministries have been established, diocesan services have expanded, and generations of clergy, religious and lay people have worked together to build communities of faith rooted in the Gospel. The Diocese has also become increasingly diverse, reflecting the rich cultural backgrounds of Catholics who now call East Anglia home.
The Jubilee Mass will provide an opportunity to give thanks for the vision and dedication of those who helped establish the Diocese and for all who have contributed to its life over the past fifty years. It is also a chance to celebrate the many blessings that continue to shape the local Church today.
As the Diocese enters its second half-century, there is a growing sense of hope and purpose. Strong parish communities, active lay involvement and a renewed commitment to mission provide firm foundations for the future. While challenges remain, the Diocese continues to invest in parish life, support its clergy, strengthen Catholic education and encourage young people in their faith.
The Jubilee celebration is therefore not only a moment to look back with gratitude, but also an opportunity to look forward with confidence. Guided by its mission to proclaim the Gospel, serve communities and nurture faith, the Diocese of East Anglia is committed to building on the foundations laid over the past fifty years.
As Bishop Peter Collins leads the Diocese in this historic celebration, the faithful will gather to thank God for all that has been achieved and to pray for continued growth, renewal and mission in the years ahead.
