The blaze broke out on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 October, with flames and dense smoke soon seen rising from St John’s. Six fire crews attended the scene, but the church suffered extensive fire and water damage, including the destruction of several stained-glass windows.
In a swift act of Christian solidarity, members of St Thomas More – part of the Waveney Valley Catholic Parish – proposed offering their church as a place of worship for their Church of England neighbours. That same evening, parish priest Fr Simon Blakesley contacted St John’s churchwardens to extend the invitation.
