Colourful way for Norwich church to celebrate 50

St George`s Catholic Church in Norwich has celebrated its 50th anniversary in a very artistic and colourful way.

The church held a three-day flower festival and art exhibition from September 10 to 12 in which Catholic parishes from across the Diocese of East Anglia were invited to contribute displays alongside other local churches and floral clubs.

Parish Priest, Fr Sean Connolly, said: "Fifty years ago our beautiful church was consecrated and made a spiritual home for the people of North Norwich and the flower festival and art exhibition are part of a year of celebrations.

"The festival has brought a lot of new people into the church and there is a real sense of community and feeling of God's presence."

All around the church itself were 44 floral arrangements from Catholic parishes including Stowmarket, Sheringham, North Walsham, St Ives, Gorleston, Norwich, Peterborough, Wymondham, Wisbech, Beccles, Downham Market, Hunstanton, Felixstowe, King's Lynn and Cherry Hinton. A couple of local Anglican churches and the Thorpe Floral Design Club also took part.

In the church hall was an art and craft exhibition, including around 120 pictures. Resident artist Helen Otter, a parishioner at Our Lady in Thorpe, was also present and there was the chance for visitors to contribute to a communal watercolour painting.

Norwich Lord Mayor, Cllr Marion Maxwell, paid a visit on Sunday and had a go at painting as well as enjoying the displays.

Festival Co-ordinator, Marie Drew, said: "The overall theme was Celebrating with Family and Friends and we let people do what they wanted to. It is a celebration of the wonderful people who caused this church to be built and the 50 years since then.

"It has been a very prayerful experience and all the displays have a theme of some kind, like the Far East Prisoners of War from Wymondham and Jesus the Teacher and Healer and Saint George and the Dragon."

Art and craft organisers were Gill Bannon and Tony Buxton and design consultant was Carol Hipperson.

Any profits from the event will go towards the Bethlehem Hospital, which the church and Diocese has existing links with.
