Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem delivers homily in Gaza

On December 22, 2024, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, delivered a homily during his visit to the Holy Family Church in Gaza to celebrate Christmas. The Diocese of East Anglia is twinned with the Patriarchate.

His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, delivered a powerful Christmas homily at the Holy Family Church in Gaza, urging the Christian community to remain steadfast in faith amidst ongoing challenges.

Addressing the congregation, Cardinal Pizzaballa spoke of the light of Christ as a source of hope and strength during a time of darkness. “If we are a light to the world, it is only because of Him,” he said, encouraging the faithful to stay rooted in their belief in Jesus despite the hardships brought by the war.

The Patriarch acknowledged the community’s resilience and assured them of continued solidarity from Christians worldwide. “We will never abandon you,” he affirmed, while emphasising the importance of unity and preparing to rebuild schools, hospitals, and homes once peace is restored.

The Cardinal also highlighted the global support shown to Gaza, citing acts of kindness and solidarity that transcended religious boundaries. He urged the faithful to guard their hearts against hatred and to reflect their Christian identity as a beacon of hope for the world.

“We must remain the light in this place,” he declared, reminding the congregation of their mission to inspire others through their faith. Cardinal Pizzaballa concluded with a heartfelt Christmas blessing, offering reassurance that “no one can take Christ’s light from us.”

The visit was a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of Gaza’s Christian community, whose courage and faith continue to shine in the face of adversity.

The Diocese of East Anglia continues to support the Patriarchate and those going through difficult times in Gaza.
