Norwich Secular Franciscans Welcome New Candidate

On Sunday 11 January, the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, the Norwich fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order celebrated an important moment in the life of their community as Martin Von Fragstein was formally admitted into Candidacy.

This marks the second stage on the journey towards full profession within the Franciscan family.

Over the past twelve months Martin has been undertaking a period of formation known as Enquiry, during which he has been learning about Franciscan spirituality and the distinctive charism of the Franciscan way of life. His formation has been guided by Paula Pearce, the fraternity’s Formation Minister, whose experience and dedication have supported Martin through this initial stage.

The next stage, Candidacy, normally lasts for two years. During this time candidates deepen their understanding of the Secular Franciscan vocation. Formation focuses on the Order’s Rule of Life, its history and structure as part of a worldwide Franciscan family, and its place within the life of the Church and the wider world. Candidates also reflect on the key Franciscan values of poverty, humility, fraternity and care for creation, which lie at the heart of Franciscan spirituality.

The ceremony itself began with the well-loved hymn Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. Members of the fraternity took part in reading the prayers and reflections that form part of the rite. As part of the celebration, Martin was presented with a copy of the Franciscan Handbook and a Canterbury Cross, symbols of his commitment to continue discerning the Franciscan vocation.

The service concluded with the beautiful Franciscan hymn Laudato Si’, after which the fraternity warmly congratulated Martin on reaching this important step in his journey.

In true Franciscan fashion, the celebration continued afterwards with a joyful shared tea. Among the refreshments was a chocolate marble cake, freshly baked by Martin himself and still warm — a fitting and delicious way to mark the occasion.
