In his homily, Bishop Peter reflected on the rich history of the Catholic Church in both Thetford and the wider Diocese of East Anglia. He spoke of the resilience and faith of those who had kept the Catholic tradition alive through the generations, laying the foundations for the vibrant parish community that exists today.
Looking back over the church’s 200-year history, the Bishop encouraged those present to give thanks for the sacrifices and dedication of previous generations while looking ahead with confidence and hope. He reminded the congregation that jubilees are not simply occasions to celebrate the past but opportunities to renew faith and recommit to the mission of proclaiming the Gospel in the years to come.
The anniversary Mass formed part of the Diocese of East Anglia’s Golden Jubilee Year celebrations, making the occasion especially significant as the parish celebrated its own bicentenary alongside the Diocese’s fiftieth anniversary.
The liturgy was marked by a spirit of thanksgiving and joy, with parishioners coming together in prayer to celebrate the enduring presence of the Catholic faith in Thetford.
Following Mass, the celebrations continued in the church gardens with a bring-and-share meal. Parishioners and visitors enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship, sharing food, conversation and memories as they celebrated the life of the parish community.
The occasion proved to be a fitting tribute to 200 years of St Mary’s Church, honouring its rich heritage while looking forward with hope to the future of Catholic life in Thetford.
