A celebration of parish history through photography attracted more than 150 visitors to St Edmund’s School Hall in Bury St Edmunds over the weekend of 27–28 June, as part of the Diocese of East Anglia’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The exhibition showcased more than 500 photographs, displayed in both printed and digital formats, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the life and history of the parish over the decades.
One of the highlights of the exhibition was a screening of a televised Mass from 1987, recorded during the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of St Edmund’s Church. The footage revealed how both the church building and its interior have evolved over the years, while also illustrating the growth and increasing diversity of the parish congregation.
The exhibition was organised by John Saunders and curated by Angela Garnace, who is currently undertaking a Master’s degree in a related field. They were supported by a dedicated team of parishioners who helped bring the project to life.
Visitors were full of praise for the exhibition, with one commenting: “The photo exhibition was awesome. It was historical. Most of all it depicted the unity of the parishioners in our lovely community.”
Reflecting on the success of the event, John Saunders said: “This was yet another example of our Parish working together aided by significant support from the Schools of St Edmund and St Benedict, many parishioners who loaned their pictures and those who came to visit. Display boards were loaned by external organisations and several people attending were non-Catholic and appreciated the displays, demonstrating our standing in the wider community. Requests for a repeat of the Exhibition to enable those who could not attend is being considered for later in 2026.”
Given the enthusiastic response, organisers are now considering staging the exhibition again later in 2026, allowing even more people the opportunity to explore the rich history and vibrant community life of the parish.
