Cambridge Syro-Malankara Mission Marks First Year

St John Henry Newman Syro-Malankara Catholic Mission, Cambridge, celebrated its first Holy Qurbono (Mass) in January 2025, under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Dr Kuriakose Thadathil, at Our Lady of Lourdes, Sawston.

Through prayer, liturgical celebrations, catechetical formation, pilgrimages and strong community participation, the faithful experienced a year marked by spiritual growth, unity and pastoral guidance. The mission continued its journey as a vibrant faith community rooted in the rich traditions of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and guided by the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, establishing a spiritual home for its congregation in Cambridgeshire.

The feast of our patron saint, St John Henry Newman, was celebrated on 4 October with a solemn Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes, Sawston. This was attended by all the parishioners. Monthly Masses became a rhythm of prayer and reflection for families and individuals, strengthening the sacramental life of the community and encouraging active participation in the mission’s pastoral activities. The faithful also participated in the annual Walsingham pilgrimage, joining Syro-Malankara Catholics from across the United Kingdom in prayer and devotion at the Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham.

During the year, the mission also witnessed an important pastoral transition from Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Thiruvalil to Rev. Fr. George Valiyaparambil.

The St John Henry Newman Syro-Malankara Catholic Mission Mass is held on the first Saturday of every month at 14:00 hrs at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Sawston. Please email mcccambs@gmail.com for any further enquiries.
