On Saturday, 8 February 2025, the Diocese of East Anglia invites everyone to join in prayer for the victims of trafficking and modern slavery.
This significant day coincides with the feast of St Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese woman canonised by Pope St John Paul II in 2000. Her life story serves as both a harrowing reminder of the reality of slavery and an inspiring testament to hope and faith.
Josephine Bakhita was just seven years old in 1877 when she was abducted by slave traders. Subjected to unimaginable suffering, she endured such trauma that she forgot her own name. Her captors called her “Bakhita,” meaning “Fortunate.” Josephine remained enslaved until the age of 30, when she was freed and later chose a life of faith, becoming a religious sister in Italy. Her remarkable journey from slavery to sainthood highlights her resilience and unwavering trust in God.
On her feast day last year, the Diocese launched an initiative to combat human trafficking and modern slavery, which Pope Francis has called “a scourge on the body of Christ.” The scale of the problem is vast: an estimated 5,000 individuals are currently enslaved across East Anglia, and in 2022 alone, 746 cases of modern slavery were identified within the Diocese. Thousands more remain unseen, waiting for someone to recognise their plight and offer help.
Pope Francis challenges us all to “find” these enslaved souls. This mission doesn’t require extraordinary skills – only a willingness to learn how to spot the signs of trafficking and safely report concerns. The Modern Slavery Helpline (08000 121 700) is a crucial resource for taking action.
The Diocese’s anti-slavery group, Freedom Watchers, welcomes volunteers of all ages. No prior experience or knowledge is necessary – just a desire to bring an end to slavery in our communities. For more information, read the Modern Slavery leaflet available in churches or online at Caritas East Anglia. You can also contact the diocesan co-lead Simon John via john_simong@hotmail.com.
As we come together to honour St Josephine Bakhita, let us remember her legacy by working tirelessly to bring freedom and dignity to those still trapped in the shadows.
Prayer:
O God, who led Saint Josephine Bakhita from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and a bride of Christ, grant, we pray, that by her example we may show constant love for the Lord Jesus crucified, remaining steadfast in charity and prompt to show compassion. Amen.
