The Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Norwich welcomed a new chapter in its life on Tuesday 7 July as Bishop Peter Collins celebrated a Sung Mass with the Rite of Induction of Fr Martin Hardy as Cathedral Dean and Parish Priest of the Cathedral with Holy Apostles.
The liturgy marked the formal beginning of Fr Martin’s ministry at the Cathedral, with clergy, parishioners and guests gathering to pray for him as he undertook his new responsibilities.
The readings chosen for the Mass reflected the mission entrusted to every parish priest. In the Gospel, Jesus declares that “the harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few”, reminding the congregation of the Church’s ongoing call to proclaim the Gospel and serve God’s people.
Following the homily, Fr Martin made the Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity before signing the official documents with Bishop Peter. The Bishop then addressed him directly, outlining the responsibilities of his new office: to celebrate the sacred mysteries, preach the Gospel faithfully, pray the Divine Office, and serve the people with zeal and charity. Fr Martin responded: “I am, with the help of God.”
The congregation also made their own commitment, promising to support and pray for their new parish priest and to work alongside him in the mission of the Church. Bishop Peter then formally inducted Fr Martin as Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist with Holy Apostles.
As part of the rite, Fr Martin was presented with the Book of the Gospels as a sign of his responsibility to proclaim God’s Word, before receiving the keys of the Cathedral, symbolising his pastoral care for the parish and his stewardship of its sacramental life.
The celebration concluded with prayers for Fr Martin and the Cathedral community as they look ahead with confidence and hope, united in their shared mission to proclaim Christ and serve the people of God.
