The whole school community, from Reception through to Year 6, joined together for the sponsored walk, travelling from the school on Dereham Road to St John the Baptist Cathedral. There, they were warmly welcomed and given a talk on the meaning of Easter by Heritage Officer, Dr Richard Maguire.
Reflecting on the event, RE Lead Mrs Bradbury said:
“Following on from last year’s success,” said Mrs Bradbury, RE Lead at Notre Dame Prep School, “we did another sponsored BIG Lent Walk in aid of CAFOD. The whole school – from Reception to Year 6 – walked from the school on Dereham Road to St John the Baptist Cathedral, where we were received by Heritage Officer, Dr Richard Maguire, for a talk on Holy Week at the Cathedral. Yet again, families and friends have been incredibly generous in sponsoring the children to show solidarity with our global brothers and sisters. In total, we have raised, £1287!”
The walk not only raised an impressive £1,287, but also provided pupils with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Holy Week during the season of Lent.
Abigail Whitefoot, President of the school’s Mini Vinnies group, spoke enthusiastically about the experience:
“It was a lot of fun – we made a banner in Mini Vinnies which I carried with my friend, Maria. Mini Vinnies give up a breaktime a week trying to help people with greater need. We are teaching younger children to raise money for charity so they feel proud. Our school is very generous!”
The Mini Vinnies group, inspired by the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society, plays a key role in encouraging charitable outreach within the school, helping younger pupils understand the importance of supporting those in need.
This year’s Big Lent Walk stands as another strong example of how the Notre Dame school community continues to live out its mission, combining prayer, learning and charitable action during Lent.
