The gathering was hosted for the first time by the newly appointed Safeguarding Coordinator, Liam Sainsbury, alongside Safeguarding Administrator Donna Wright. The Diocese would also like to express its gratitude to the Wymondham Parish Safeguarding Representative, Anthony Hedges, for his support in arranging the event and, in particular, for undertaking vital ‘car parking’ duties to ensure all visitors could park safely at the venue.
The day began with a thought-provoking presentation from Professor Lisa Oakley, who spoke on spiritual abuse and the dynamics of disclosure. Her talk was warmly received and prompted thoughtful engagement among those present.
Later in the morning, Fr David Bagstaff, Vicar General, celebrated Mass. During the liturgy he offered prayers for victims and survivors of abuse and for all those dedicated to safeguarding work across the diocese.
After lunch, participants took part in bespoke safeguarding training delivered by Liam. The session was highly interactive and encouraged valuable discussion, with Parish Safeguarding Representatives sharing experiences and insights from their work in parish communities.
Looking ahead, the Diocesan Safeguarding Team has already begun planning next year’s event, which will take place on Saturday 31 October 2026 in Newmarket.
