The ‘Wash’ SVP Conference in the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Hunstanton, with St Cecilia’s, Dersingham, organised a Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Saturday 16 May.
A month of preparation went into the event, including personal invitations, referrals, pairing drivers with those needing transport, practising hymns, checking the liturgy, preparing the church and arranging refreshments.
Our parish priest, Canon Peter Rollings, spoke upliftingly about the vocation of prayer and service to the whole Church offered by those who are elderly, infirm, sick or housebound.
A total of 44 people received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. They were blessed, prayed over and surrounded by prayer, while the congregation gently chanted Lay Your Hands Gently Upon Us.
The refreshments afterwards provided an opportunity for people to connect and share their experiences of the Mass. For some housebound parishioners, it was the first time they had returned to church for a very long time.
Since that day, many people have approached members of the ‘Wash’ SVP Conference to say how profoundly moved they were by the service and the gathering afterwards. They found that the sense of care, community and celebration had a hugely positive impact on their wellbeing and gave them a deep sense of peace.
Many also said that Canon Peter’s words of encouragement and compassion continued to resonate with them. Truly, the power of the Holy Spirit is moving in this place.
